Everyone wants to achieve success, but most people just wish they were successful and do nothing about it. Others try doing one thing or another, but quit after a while, either because they see that they have to invest time and effort, are afraid of the competition, because nothing happens immediately, or because they are afraid of failure. Usually, only a small percentage acts, persevere and does not give up.
Why some of the people achieve success? They achieve success because they possess self-discipline, among other things. This ability helps them to avoid wasting their day doing things that gets them nowhere. They are able to avoid temptations, such as spending hours on Facebook, sitting hours in front of the television, or jumping from one thing to another.
Self-discipline equals perseverance, one of the most important qualities you need for achieving success. Speaking of success, I don’t mean just financial success or status, but also success in many other areas other than career and job. Success in diet, in studies, in learning a foreign language, learning a new skill, losing weight, managing your time more efficiently, or changing some of your habits.
There are people who are appalled by the word self discipline. They associate it with self-denial, limitation, pain, scarcity and lack. This is a completely wrong assumption!
You use self discipline not to deny yourself and inflict pain on yourself, but for manifesting inner strength, for avoiding the distractions around you that take away your attention from your goal, and for sticking to what you want to do until you do it.
It is the number one factor for being perseverant. Look at the people around you who succeed in carrying out their decisions, doing efficiently their chores and tasks, and achieving their plans and goals. They all possess perseverance, and perseverance is self-discipline.
So how do gain this self-discipline? Simple! By exercising and training this ability. I have written many articles on this subject, which you can find at my website and at my blog.
Here is one of the first exercises I practiced, when I first started training myself. It has to do with drinking coffee:
Do you drink your coffee with or without sugar? If you are like most people, you put a teaspoon of sugar or even more into your cup of coffee. You can use this habit as an exercise for developing and improving your self-discipline.
You develop this skill by temporarily abstaining from doing something that you usually do. This arouses inner resistance, but by overcoming this inner resistance you gain inner strength.
Make a decision that for a whole week you are going to drink your cup of coffee without sugar. You may not like it, and the coffee might taste too bitter. Just go on. You will probably feel that you are spoiling a dear pleasure, but you are doing so for just a week and for a very good reason. You are doing so in order to develop inner strength, perseverance and willpower. You are developing an ability that will help you change and improve habits. You are gaining a skill that will help you to live better and achieve success.
The exercise is not about coffee, but a an exercise that requires extending effort and overcoming inner resistance, Do this exercise for a week and even two weeks, gain the inner strength, and then you may revert to drinking your coffee with sugar, as you did before. It is like training your body with lifting weight at the gym.
Incidentally, this is the first exercise I practiced when I started training myself, and up to this day I drink my coffee without sugar. I have learned to appreciate and enjoy the bitter taste of coffee. It tastes richer, and I find sugar to be spoiling its taste.
I have compiled a long list of exercises that you can practice anywhere and at any time. These are simple exercises. Some of them are easy and some require more inner effort, but nothing is complicated, and you don’t do things that might hurt you are unreasonable.
In order to practice these exercises you don’t have to stand on one leg for hours or lie down on a bed of nails. Not at all! You will be practicing simple exercises, even while working or doing your daily tasks and chores. You will find these exercises in the book Willpower and Self Discipline (it is a digital book, which download to your computer, right away) together clear guidance, advice and instructions.
