The Popularity of Quotes and Sayings

People from all over the world enjoy reading quotes. There are multitude of websites and other online resources with quotes and sayings. I do not remember reading a book that did not contain at least one quote from famous author. In most presentations and public speeches, speakers use quotes to nail the point down. They are everywhere. Why are quotes so popular?

1. Quotes are short but mind provoking. You do not have to read a whole book to get to the point. You do not need to read a lot for your mind to be stimulated and even challenged. A short sentence can sometimes trigger a whole range of processes such as thinking, observing and reflecting. These are then catalysts for changes in life.

2. Quotes teach. Quotes are not just words. They carry much more than just meaning - they carry human experiences. Sometimes, there is so much life experience expressed in one short sentence that you can almost feel (see, hear, touch, smell...) what the author has put through to reach that "aha" point and express it in a statement. As Miguel de Servantes wrote: " Proverbs are short sentences drawn from long experiences." Since they enable us to reflect upon experiences of other people, quotes and sayings can serve as a powerful learning tool.

3. Quotes motivate. Through my personal experience with quotes, I have experienced their motivational power. Sometimes, a single quote, the right quote, is powerful enough to motivate you to turn your life around. They have the power to replace destructive and negative thoughts with positive ones.

This is why I love quotes. No doubt there are other reasons for their popularity too. People just love quotes for different reasons. Nevertheless, quotes are effective and powerful tools to enhance life for the better. Tested and recommended.
