One of the most difficult lessons I've learned in my spiritual journey is that everything is already inside of me. Everything I want in life - happiness, success, love and prosperity is all at my fingertips. The challenge has been is how to access this power within me and how to create a direct link to my spiritual source.
It's sort of like that V8 commercial, where you hit your hand on your head, and say "I could have had everything I wanted all along!" What was I thinking? Well, sometimes,it's like they say, life is a journey, not a destination. It's a series of stepping stones and detours and life's lessons.
For myself, there have been levels of healing, and levels of learning, and levels of growing. I've been reading spiritual books ever since I can remember. I'm always working on self-improvement, because I believe that when we change our mind, we can change our life.
Most of us have had bad experiences, whether it was with our family of origin, our relationships, our career, or with our friends. Sometimes, we carry the hurt and pain around for a long time, and it affects everything we do. They say that forgiveness is for the strong, and holding on to pain is for the weak.
Because of some of these negative situations, we may have adopted a subconscious negative belief that sometimes we don't even know we're carrying around with us. For instance, we may want more "prosperity" in our lives, but we are in fear, and thinking "lack".
So many people are going through a financially struggling time right now with the economy. The one thing I've learned through spiritual teachers and prayer, is that my job is not my source of abundance. My abundance comes from God, the Divine, Spirit, or a power greater than myself. When I began to have faith in this principle, I began to relax and know that things are happening in my life in divine order. It may sound crazy, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
For those of you who saw the movie "The Secret", all of the spiritual teachers talk about how we have to claim our prosperity, and say it, feel it, take action on it, and believe it. The movie sent out a powerful message to the Universe, and it quickly became an underground hit. What the movie didn't really have time to touch on, was the work that is needed to adopt a prosperous attitude.
One of the keys to my prosperity work is immersing myself with prosperity books, audios and affirmations. I've spent a great deal of my life picking up and adopting negative beliefs. It's taken some work and time to adopt a new positive belief system.
Growing up, my family of origin struggled financially. With an alcoholic father, a mother that stayed home, and six kids, at times, there was barely enough to go around. My father kept losing jobs, and our home situation went from stable to very unstable. I adopted a lot of negative beliefs about money, about my father, and about how I wasn't going to be like that in my life. I quickly associated any resemblance to my father's actions as "failure".
Unfortunately, life happens, and situations happen that are out of our control, and on two different occasions, I felt like a "failure" and compared myself to my father. It took a lot of work on my part and with the help of some seasoned professionals to help me turn my negative beliefs around. Nobody on the planet thought I was a "failure" except, myself, and it came from these subconscious negative beliefs. Working with positive affirmations, reading spiritual books, and being "grateful" for all that I have in my life, and understanding that there is a power greater than myself, helped me tremendously.
At times, it's difficult to be grateful. But, gratitude is a big key to allowing more into our lives. We have to be grateful for everything we have now, even if it's not much. Be grateful for your family, your work, your career, your relationships, your ability to put food on the table. I've even kept "Gratitude Journals", where every day I would write what I was grateful for. Sometimes, I wrote that I was grateful for my dog, or my house, or the sun shining that day. It doesn't have to be much, but starting to feel grateful for everything in your life, opens the door to prosperity.
Reaching out to a higher power, is also a key to prosperity. Knowing that you don't have to "control" every situation, takes the pressure of your shoulders, and increases your faith. There's truth to the saying "Let go and Let God." When I was in NYC, back in 1996, when I was there auditioning for the performing arts, I walked into a Chase bank on Broadway to open a checking account. I had just done a six month spiritual program, with a Course in Miracles Unity teacher, and his therapist wife, and we did a lot of work on prosperity. When we were selecting the checks I wanted to order, I told the gentleman helping me that I wanted to put something on my checks. I was thinking to myself - he's going to think I'm crazy. This is NYC! So, I told him that I wanted "God is the source of my Abundance" put on the left hand bottom of every check. He just smiled, like knew what I was talking about!
Another key to prosperity, is really working with affirmations, and believing that we all are deserving of prosperity. I've worked with positive affirmations for at least 25 years, and I can't say enough good things about them. There's a lot of internal work that has to be done to believe that prosperity is everyone's divine right. I write positive affirmations, I read positive affirmation, and I listen to affirmation audios and CD's. At times, I've totally immersed myself with affirmations. One of the great gurus of positive affirmations - Louis Hay suggests that you look into a mirror and say "I love you", and repeat affirmations by looking at yourself. She says by looking in the mirror, you are affirming yourself and loving yourself.
Working with positive affirmations has literally given me a new lease on life. I don't believe in limitations. I don't believe in lack. What I do believe in, is the Universe is eternally abundant, and abundance is my divine right. I know and trust my higher power, and I am more relaxed in understanding that not everything in the world is on my timing. I keep being grateful for everything in my life, and I keep reading and working my affirmations. I now know that the key to prosperity is within me.
