Quotes and Sayings Are Great Motivators

Famous people have their mottoes and great companies have their slogans (e.g. "Just Do It" by Nike). All of them attempt to embed their life philosophy, fundamental beliefs and directions into one simple sentence. Why people do that? What is so compelling in having whole your life and way of thinking "zipped" into a single statement? Even great motivational speakers will call their audience and readers to try and define their purpose and goals in a single statement. Obviously, there is some power in powerful statements and sayings which show much more than those few words.

First of all, such single statements are easy to remember. It is much easier for people to remember their vision or purpose if it is stated in a simple sentence. This especially holds true for organizations and corporations. People will have a hard time remembering long and sophisticated mission or vision statements. In addition, they will not be bothered to learn them by heart. The direction, goals and values of the company can and should be expressed briefly, so employees and other stakeholders (customers, suppliers, creditors etc.) remember at all times where the company is headed. Even if you wake them up in the middle of the night. And you probably know what they say: "If you don't know where you are going, how can you expect to get there?"

Secondly, it takes only few seconds of your time to energize and remind yourself of your vision and purpose, when difficult times arise. You do not have to read the whole book. You do not have to look for it in your notepad. A short and simple statement of your mission, vision, purpose or goal (whatever you have set for yourself) easily comes to mind and can motivate you to push forward. If it is short, it takes only seconds to be recalled from your memory and makes an instant positive impact on your attitude and feelings.

This is why slogan, motto, vision and other powerful statements need to be short, simple and straightforward. In other words, it is short so it can be available when you will need it the most. When life presses you, your mind will search for something to hold on. A short but powerful statement that you have set for yourself will help you get up and continue your journey.

In addition to defining your own purpose, goals, values or vision of life in a single statement, one can find reading and remembering inspirational quotes and sayings very advantageous. Quotes can be short, but very powerful statements for they are much more than words only - they carry human experiences. Because they are easy to remember and are proven to be great motivating force, it is worthwhile to read and remember them on a regular basis.

Here are some examples:

"You gotta keep on keepin' on." Joe Dirt

"Never retreat. Never explain. Get it done and let them howl." Benjamin Jowett

"My life is my message." Mahatma Ghandi

"The man who is not dead still has a chance." Lebanese proverb

Now imagine when life becomes though, you can easily recall some of these statements, if you learn them by heart. They are short and simple, but demonstrate great motivational and inspirational power.

I have found on numerous occasions that learning specific quotes and sayings by heart has immensely benefited my life and boosted my progress toward set goals. By emerging in my conscious mind from time to time, motivational and inspirational quotes keep reminding me where I am, where I am going, and that I am capable enough to reach my goal. In other words, they motivate me to press forward.

A gift and personal note from me in memory of a great man

Legendary UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden died Friday at the age of 99. He was not only the most successful college basketball coach in history (winning 10 out of 12 NCCA National Championships, at one point winning 88 games in a row!) but more importantly to me, Coach Wooden was one of the finest human beings I ever knew. I met him and interviewed him for the first time almost 20 years ago for my PowerTalk interview series – at the time I was 30 & he was 80!? I was profoundly moved by how much he cared for his players and the love he had for his wife Nellie who died in 1985. They were married for 53 years and Coach wrote her a Love Letter every year on the anniversary of her passing. He kept all those letters on the bed beside him and he also only slept on his side of the bed, keeping her side untouched. Coach prayed every day and knew some day he would be reunited with her, and now after 25 years they are back together. ;-)

In spite of his legendary accomplishments he was one of the most humble human beings you could ever meet. We stayed in touch over the years and then last year I did another interview with him. It turned out to be one of the last interviews of his life. At the time I was working on my new NBC prime time Series, “Breakthrough with Tony Robbins” and I asked Coach Wooden if he would meet with an NBA basketball player who had suffered a sudden stroke that ended his career in an instant. Worse than the stroke was the fact that the man felt that without basketball he had lost his worth as a man.? Coach Wooden’s words penetrated the man and became a key moment in his turnaround. We filmed the interaction for the show but it doesn’t premier until after July 27th so I can’t share the footage until our show airs… but, I can share Coach Wooden’s gifts with you through the original audio interview I did many years ago. In honor of him I’ve made this very special interview available for download here (please download now as I can only keep the link up for the next 48 hours).

I hope you are as touched by him as I was, and continue to be, as I listen to his soulful words teaching me even today, after his passing.

Warmest regards,

Anthony Robbins

From Editor: Thank you to everyone for posting your thoughts and comments. It means a lot to Tony to see you were as inspired and touched by Coach’s words as he was.
